Fred John Morris |
Fred Morris received his MA in 1944 for a thesis entitled A Study of the String Galvanometer. His PhD was granted in 1951, The Allotropic Transformations of Selenium. Frederick John Morris was born December 6, 1919, in Chicago to English parents, Harry and Lillian Morris. Harry had immigrated in 1911. Lillian, born in Manchester, had come with her parents, John A. and Georgine Richardson in 1914. Harry Morris was a clerk for the Edison company in 1920 and later became proprietor of a radio shop. Lillian worked as a sales person in the shop.
Fred attended Texas College of Arts & Industries in Kingsville. Fred married Vera Walsh on August 31, 1942 in Chicago, where both lived. In 1948-49, while a graduate student, he published a number of papers in the area of optics with UT Professor Howard S. Coleman. He was an instructor in the physics department. In the 1950s, he formed his company, Electro-Mechanics Company in Austin, Texas. It was located across the low-water crossing in West Austin. He was President and Director of Research. He was a Scientific Advisor to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a Consultant on Department of Defense Research and Engineering Programs. His company employed a number of graduate students from UT. Vera was born October 23, 1919, in Chicago, IL to Earnest Leo Walsh (1889–) and Ottilie Aannhauer ( maybe Damshower) (1895–). Her father, shown at right, was a tourist agent and was born in Quebec, Canada. He had come to the US in 1914 and was naturalized in 1919. Her mother was born in Chicago. Vera had a twin sister named Virginia (maybe married Harry C. Bellock in 1943) and an older sister Margarette. Vera had been a trapeze artist before she married Fred. They had two children, two boys, Lee John and Gary Kim (1954–) and a girl, Nansi. Lee John, born in Blanco, TX, April 4, 1947, died May 20, 1953 in Austin. He was only six. Nansi was born in Blanco, March 1, 1948. She died October 10, 2008 in Pleasanton, Atascosa,TX. (From her obituary.) “Nansi Morris, age 60, of Dripping Springs passed away in Pleasanton, TX, October 10, 2008. Nansi was born March 1, 1948. She was survived by her brother, Gary Kim Morris and wife Colleen of Dripping Springs. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Fred John Morris and Vera (Walsh) Morris, as well as a brother, Lee Morris.”
Vera died September 1992, in Austin, TX.
