Fred Morris received his MA in 1944 for a thesis entitled A Study of the String Galvanometer. His PhD was granted in 1951, The Allotropic Transformations of Selenium. Frederick John Morris was born December 6, 1919, in Chicago to English parents, Harry and Lillian Morris. Harry had immigrated in 1911. Lillian, born in Manchester, had come with her parents, John A. and Georgine Richardson in 1914. Harry Morris was a clerk for the Edison company in 1920 and later became proprietor of a radio shop. Fred attended Texas College of Arts & Industries in Kingsville. Fred married Vera Walsh on August 31, 1942 in Chicago, where both lived. In 1948-49, while a graduate student, he published a number of papers in the area of optics with UT Professor Howard S. Coleman. He was an instructor in the physics department. In the 1950s, he formed his company, Electro-Mechanics Company in Austin, Texas. It was located across the low-water crossing in West Austin. He was President and Director of Research. He was a Scientific Advisor to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a Consultant on Department of Defense Research and Engineering Programs. His company employed a number of graduate students from UT. Fred’s published interests were quite broad as evidence by some of his publications:
