Karl Irwin Trappe was born 1944 to Albert Henry and Ramona Juliette Irwin Trappe in San Antonio, Texas. His father, a navy veteran, was an aircraft electrician.
Karl attended Burbank High School in San Antonio, Texas and studied physics at Trinity University in San Antonio. Graduated with BS degree from University of Texas in 1967. Did a PhD under supervision of William McCormick. Married Diane Eileen Verrall in 1966. They had a son, Wade Karlton and a daughter Tare Dee.
Married Alice Beth Draving in 1994. They had two daughter Ashley Kathleen and Victoria Alice.
