William Wallace Clendenin was born January 17, 1926, to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Pipes and Maybelle Baumann Clendenin in Mount Vernon, NY.. He was reared in El Paso, Texas and was graduated from Austin High Schoo in 194l. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Swarthmore College and a master's degree in in physics from Yale University. He received his PhD from Yale in 1952. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He served in the U. S. Signal Corps and held the rank o ffirst lieutenant in the reserve. His siblings Alice (Mrs. R. M. Thomson) , Thomas Michael and John Livingston. Alice and John also attended Swarthmore College. Michael was a graduate of Columbia University and was Phi Beta Kappa like William. At the time of the wedding Alice was living in Syracuse, NY.
He married Emma Ratcliffe Lowe in June of 1952 in New Haven, Connecticutt. Emma was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Lowe of York Village, Maine. The wedding was in Dwight Memorial Chapel at Yale. they honeymooned in Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. They resided in Princeton, NJ where William was conducting research. William and Emma had a son, Andrew.
He was a Senior Scientist at Westinghouse in Pittsburg, PA. He joined Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in 1964. He was working there when he died of a sudden illness.
He entered service on July 6,, 1944. He separated March 7, 1947 at Camp Beale, CA.
He died July 23, 1969 in Los Alamos, NM. He is buried in Santa Fe National Cemetery.
