The Center for Center for Theoretical Physics was established in 1976 when John Wheeler left Princeton and join the University of Texas. Chair Tom Griffy arranged for support from the University and additional funds were provided by the National Sciences Foundation. Initially the center only included John Wheeler. John sought the advice of Bryce DeWitt, Al Schild and Richard Matzner, members of the Center for Relativity, in making his first appointment. They decided to recruit Philip Candelas, who was currently finishing his doctorate at Oxford University. Philip was appointed Research Assistant his first year until his DPhil was completed. The next faculty appointment was Claudio Teitelboim, a Chilean physicist who had been John's student at Princeton. Another Oxford student recruited was David Deutsch.
John was very popular among the graduate students as a thesis advisor. Below is a photo of a few members of the Center. (Photo from: "Geons, Black Holes & Quantum Foam" by John Wheeler and Kenneth Ford, Copyright 1948)
