Obituary for John R. Porter

PORTER- John R., 70, Laurel View Village, Davidsville, formerly of Markleton, died June 5, 2010 at In-Touch Hospice House of Journey’s Rest, Somerset. Born May 25, 1940 in Conroe, TX. Son of James C. and Dorothy (Echols) Porter, Houston, TX. Also survived by wife of 48 years the former Margaret L. “Peggy” Rockwood
Sister Barbara Boswell, Preston, ID; brothers Jim Porter, Santa Fe, NM, Jay Porter, Knoxville, TN and Jeff Porter, Chromo, CO. John received his BS and PhD (1965) in Physics from the University of Texas, Austin, Hia dissertation was entitled, A Multipole Formalism for Test particles in General Relativity. He received a NSF Fellowship to King’s College, University of London, 1965-1967. He joined the Department of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh in 1967 and taught there until 1997. Along with his wife Peggy he managed Porters’ Farview Farm Greenhouse in Markleton from 1987-2004. John was also an avid woodworker and enjoyed being in the outdoors. At John’s request there will be no viewing or service.
