Marco Antonio Zuniga was born October 20, 1942, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras to Franisco and Mariana Izaguirre Zuniga. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Enginering from University of Honduras in 1965. After completing his undergraduate work he enrolled in the physics graduate program at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1969, he received his Master of Arts degree woth a thesis entitled, "Delayed neutron counting technique for uranium determination." He received his Doctor of Philosphy degree in 1975. his dissertation was entitled, "Gravity and magnetic survey of the Sula Valley, Honduras, Central America". His work was supervised by UT Professor Claude Horton, Sr.
Marco was a professor physics at U. Honduras, Tegucigalpa, 1973-1976. He served a physics department head at U. Honduras during 1976-1983. In 1983 he was appointed graduate dean, and held that position until1991. From 1991 until 1995 he was head of the geophysics program. He was an active membe of the College of Engineers.
Marco was involved with a number of professional organizations. He was a member of the Society of Professional Physicists serving as president) and the Honduras Physics Society He also served a president of the Honduras Academy of Sciences in 1984. He was the recipient National Science award from the President of Honduras 1977.
In 1984, Marco attended the 8th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering in San Francisco, CA. He was involved with research that might provide some early warning of earthquakes. He hope to install a network of sensor throughout Central America.
His hobbies included playing pool and ping-pong.
Marco married Lucy Roberta Barahona, January 2, 1966. Their children are Marco Antonio, Roberto Francisco and Christian David.
Sadly Marco died an untimely death on March 29, 1995. Following his death, his family estanblish the Dr. Marco Antonio Zuniga Izaguirre Endowed Scholarship in Engineering and Physics.
