William Leslie Spearman Jr. was born to William Spearman and Willie Margaret Henry on April 30, 1942. WWII was going on and William Sr. had been drafted into the military.  Billy as he was commonly called was the only child born to this union and soon after his birth, his parents divorced and he was primarily raised by his mother, grandfather and grandmother in Crockett, Texas.

The adults in Billy’s house were all educators and his grandfather was the principal of The Crockett Colored School. where Billy attended as a student and learned to play the trumpet. He loved playing the trumpet and was a part of the school’s Drum and Bugle Team

.
When it was time for Bill (as he prefers to be called at this time), to apply to college the family wanted him to attend The University of Texas. He was accepted, however the campus was segregated and he was in the first group of African American boys to live and sleep on campus. This experience encouraged him to begin a life focused on activism against racism. During his time at UT he met and dated Delores Earls who was also a UT student but since her home was Austin, she lived at home with her family.

He graduated in 1963 with a major in physics. After graduation Bill and Delores married and moved to Denver, Colorado where they both worked for IBM.  To this union was born a daughter named Melanie.  Several years later Bill and Delores divorced.

In 1974 Bill relocated to the San Fransico Bay Area to work on a project for IBM. There he met an individual who was recruiting IT professionals to work in Saudi. Arabia. He was truly excited by the possibility of working in the Middle East. He convinced his current girlfriend, Janice Charleston to go with him, but first they had to get married.

Bill thrived in Saudi Arabia working with Saudis and a number of multinationals. Together they installed systems that transformed communication in the Kingdom.

Bill was already a certified diver and being close to places where he could dive more frequently transformed his life. Over the years, he dove in the Red Sea, Seychelles, Bali, Kenya, Caribbean and other places.

For a period of several years, Bill had his own computer consulting company in Denver named INFODYN. He also worked as a consultant for the City of Denver and other companies.  During this period, Kwame was born in 1984 and Adamma was born in 1987.

Melanie, Bill’s first born is married to Mike Clark and is the mother of Ty, 20 and Reece 14. They live in San Diego.  Once Bill came back to the US, most of his dives have been with Melanie and her husband.
